* * * *

Colin was adorable when he was flustered. Matt knew he shouldn’t be thinking about that, not when Colin was pouring out his heart and his most shameful secrets to him, but he couldn’t help it. He already knew most of the things Colin was saying, and he hadn’t had the opportunity to see Colin this close up since the day they’d met.

“Colin, you were twenty-two. You could barely protect yourself. How were you supposed to do anything for William?” Matt understood where Colin was coming from and why he felt so guilty, but he didn’t think he had a reason to.

Realizing that Colin hated himself so much for what he’d done broke Matt’s heart, especially when he knew Colin had isolated himself for the past twenty years. He could have had a life full of love and joy, and instead, he’d been so afraid and guilty that he’d kept himself lonely, even while married and with two sons around.

And that was something else they needed to talk about. But before they did, Matt was going to try again to make Colin see he needed to forgive himself. He didn’t think he’d manage—if William hadn’t, nobody could—but maybe he could help at least a little.

Colin jerked when Matt took his hand. He didn’t pull away, but Matt could see he was uncomfortable, and he wasn’t sure whether it was because they weren’t really anything to each other yet or because he thought he didn’t deserve it. Or maybe it was because he was married and he felt guilty. Matt didn’t know, and he’d never find out if Colin didn’t let him in. “We all make mistakes, Colin.”

“But not everyone sends their lover to jail for something he didn’t do.”

“What do you think you could have done differently?”

“I should have told the truth.”

“That you and William were together?”

“Yes.”

“What would have happened then?”

Colin’s expression twisted into a painful one. “My father would have exploded. He’d probably have dragged me back home.”

“And then?”

“He would have talked to the alpha.”

“Who would have either kicked you and William out of the pack, jailed the two of you or worse, hurt you. Right?”

“What do you want me to say?”

“I’d like you to admit that you did the best thing for you. And yes, it was shitty, and you probably shouldn’t have, but you panicked. You could have lost everything if you’d admitted to the truth. I’m not sure why the old alpha decided to jail William rather than do something more drastic, but you couldn’t have known that.”

“He wasn’t that bad back then. He became worse over the years, and I think he listened to my father. They weren’t friends, but they thought the same way, and my father didn’t want anyone to know that I’d let William kiss me. I don’t think he ever really believed William would force me to do anything. We’d been friends for years, and even though my father never liked him, he knew him.”

“So you’re saying that you
